A tragic-comedy with a bizarre theme which takes us on a rollercoaster of emotions, The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? questions and explores the limits of tolerance. Perceived values are transgressed and love and relationships become the casualites.
Albee keeps escalating the events on stage, not all at once but in unexpected jolts and turns, probing into transgressive areas of human sexuality and the limits of tolerance. It’s very funny, of course. The dark, provocative humor is masterfully woven into the play through the brittle, caustic and literary savy of the dialogue. More remarkably, the play is almost equally tragic and deeply human.

Edward Albees grandioses Provo-Stück über die Liebe
Ein schockierendes Drama – ein Mann hat eine Affäre mit einer Ziege !! Und Albee, der dafür 2002 den begehrten Tony Award für das beste Stück des Jahres nach 1963 (für Who´s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?) zum zweiten Mal erhielt, dreht die dramaturgische Schraube langsam an, erhöht das Tempo, nimmt wieder etwas Dampf heraus, baut einige unerwartete Wendungen ein und leuchtet so die verbotenen Zonen menschlicher Sexualität und die Grenzen unserer Toleranz aus. Und natürlich hat er die Sache auch mit einer ordentlichen Portion seines typisch absurd-provokativen Humors versehen.
Der weltweite Erfolg von The Goat or, Who Is Sylvia? bei Publikum und Kritik war für Albee, den viele in den 90er Jahren längst abgeschrieben hatten,eine große Genugtuung und brachte auch einige seiner frühen Stücke noch einmal an den Broadway und ins Londoner Westend zurück.
