SAMUEL BECKETT

Panel Discussion and Reading

WALTER ASMUS, CONOR LOVETT and JUDY HEGARTY LOVETT on working with Beckett and Beckett’s works, moderated by GABY HARTEL

Reading from the first volume of the letters of Samuel Beckett – Christian Dieterle will read from the German translation.

Director Walter Asmus was Beckett’s assistant for many years; Conor Lovett has been heralded as one of the most important Beckett interpreters of our time. Together with his wife and director Judy Hegarty Lovett, he has created numerous Beckett shows that they have since presented in more than 25 countries as Gare St Lazare Players Ireland since 1996.

The Beckett expert Gaby Hartel will moderate the panel discussion about working with Beckett and his works.

Suhrkamp-Verlag published the German translation (by Chris Hirte) of the first volume of the definitive edition of the letters of Samuel Beckett a few months ago. The second half of the evening will feature a reading – in German and English – from this volume of letters (1929 to 1940), including fascinating impressions from Beckett’s six-month trip to Germany in 1936/1937 as well as the explosive conflict surrounding the publication of his first novel Murphy.
