The Lab

THE LAB is the artist and audience development series at English Theatre Berlin (ETB). Founded by Daniel Brunet in 2003, THE LAB supplements the main stage season and artistic mission of ETB by providing a forum for the presentation of new work and additional programming in the form of readings followed by post-performance discussions with the audience.

Taking place monthly, The LAB consists of two programs:

- GLOBAL SPOTLIGHT presents staged readings of important and innovative recently produced English-language plays from around the world, including contemporary German drama in English translation, keeping our audience conversant with international styles and trends in playwriting.

- MADE IN BERLIN provides a forum for the first public presentation of new writing or performance pieces by Berlin-based artists.

A post-performance discussion, one of the signature features of THE LAB, is held after every presentation, allowing ETB’s artists and audience an opportunity to discuss the work presented, provide feedback as well as address larger topics.

The MADE IN BERLIN program is the home for new English-language work by professional Berlin-based writers and performers. THE LAB provides a framework that allows artists to present works in progress to an audience for the first time and receive the feedback they need to further refine and complete their pieces. These presentations are NOT full productions; each slot receives a maximum of two or three rehearsals and an absolute minimum of technical support.

THE LAB accepts submissions of new plays and performance pieces for the MADE IN BERLIN program year-round. The only formal requirements are that the work is in English, the submitting artist is based in Berlin and that it has not previously been presented in public. The LAB team will evaluate submissions on an ongoing basis as they are received and attempt to provide a response within thirty days.

To submit your work, please send an email with your play or performance piece, a synopsis and character breakdown and your CV to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
