THE FULL IRISH is a ten-day festival celebrating contemporary Irish theatre and performance in the German capital during the year of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The festival has received generous support from Culture Ireland. Dan Mulhall, the Irish Ambassador to Germany, serves as the patron of the festival.

The bursting of the Irish real estate bubble and with it the death of the Celtic Tiger seems to have paradoxically released an enormous amount of creative potential in the Irish cultural scene. In recent years, theatre makers, filmmakers, authors and artists in Dublin, Cork, Sligo and Galway have focused strongly on topics dealing with contemporary Irish history, from dealing with outsiders and immigrants to the social consequences of the global financial crisis and are experimenting with new forms, especially in theatre.

Since the early 1990s, English Theatre Berlin has invited numerous companies and performers such as Gare St. Lazare Players, Blue Raincoat, Inis Theatre, Ridiculusmus, Semper Fi Ireland, Chris O’Neill, Balloonatics, Lucid Productions, Meridian Theatre or Dubbeljoint to Berlin.

As a ten-day festival of new Irish theatre and performance, THE FULL IRISH both focuses on this programming concentration of English Theatre Berlin and provides a suitable cultural framework for the Irish theatre and literary scenes in the German capital during the year of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
