English in Daily German Life
You can hardly overestimate the influence the English language has in German life today: in public spaces, on the street, over the Internet and on TV.  Take a walk down any of the busy shopping streets of Berlin and you won’t go five minutes without hearing it.  The names of business and stores contain more and more English words and even posters and advertisements meant to attract Germans use it.  If you cannot understand English, it’s virtually impossible to make full use of the Internet, the medium that defines the era we’re living in.

But, what influence does English have on the way we live our daily lives? How can Grandma Erna possibly understand what she sees in shop windows?  What in the world do you think a “Cake Shop” sells if you don’t speak English?  Does Coffee To Go really come from Togo? And, what about the confusion native English speakers experience when they see words used that are apparently English, but which make absolutely no sense to them?  What influence does this use of two languages have on the way we live our lives?
