written and directed by Priscilla Bergey performed by the members of BERLIN INTERNATIONAL YOUTH THEATRE A magical tale filled with thrilling adventure, courage and friendship, where dark fears and bright hopes swim around together in a sea of dreams. An alternative fantasy world, where Shakespeare's "TheTempest".leaves off - on the ship with everyone happily sailing back home to Naples. The magician Prospero has given up his magic powers in order to resume his dukedom in Naples and his daughter Miranda and Prince Ferdinand have been engaged to be married at the young age of 15 and after knowing each other for only three days. But everything goes horribly wrong. Especially for Miranda and Ferdinand who are swept overboard in a tsunami then grudgingly rescued by mermaids and then dumped on a ship of feisty pirate maids. They end up scaling cliffs on a strange island crawling with assassins, monsters and vicious trees. In the form of a Greek chorus, the waves tell the tale full of mythological imagery and sassy dialogue interspersed with snippets of text from Ulysses, Alice in Wonderland, Treasure Island, and Leonce and Lena. A sparkling rainbow of talented young actors ages 10-16 from Berlins new International Youth Theatre Company (BIYT) fill the stage, playing a vast range of colorful characters. Their charm is infectious.Lending the play an exhilarating freshness a new team of talented artists have created original musical, costumes and special effects, sweeping us away to a land of enchantment which we vaguely recognize as a place that we have been to long ago. It's never-never land with a twist and --its better than ever. For young and old alike. Assistant director: Ruby Grosser Production assistant: Carina Wendlandt Costumes: Ilaria di Carlo Sound-scape: Natalia Lincoln Special effects: John-Erik Jordan Props: Toby Burdon |
